Wednesday June 8th All Day

Today Mark and Brian headed out for an all day trip. We started off looking for Trout but the water was muddy and very fresh due to all the rain we had lately. We caught a bunch of small Stripers but no Trout. We decided to head to the ocean and try sight fishing for Cobia. Turned out to be a good plan as we caught 4 Cobia getting our limit and releasing one. No monsters but 3 quality fish for the grill. Thanks guys, had a blast!IMG_1953 IMG_1949 IMG_1945 IMG_0161

Monday June 5th

Today Wayne Vandiver took his son Russell plus good friends Mike and Greg out for a 3/4 day trip. We started off looking for Spanish Mackerel and found plenty on a pretty color change. After we had all we wanted we decided to try some chumming. We caught a nice Spinner Shark and also caught some more Spanish and nice Bluefish on light tackle jigging in the slick. We ended the trip with some Trout fishing in the sound. Thanks for a fun day guys!IMG_1935 IMG_1925 IMG_1929 IMG_1932

Friday June 3rd Morning and Afternoon

Fishing was really tough today. We had fog this morning and some of the strongest current I can remember due to the mini hurricane that reformed yesterday. We caught some Spanish Mackerel and BluefishIMG_1917 IMG_1913 but the Sharks and Cobia just didn’t want to play. This afternoon we did some Trout fishing to start then tried for a Cobia. Conditions were still tough but we did manage one small Cobia that we released. Great to have Ryan and Bill Denny back again this year!

Wednesday June 1st morning and afternoon

This morning Tom and Tommy had great shark fishing. We caught Blacktips, Spinners, Sandbars and Sharpnoses. With overcast conditions we were hoping for a Cobia but we never got one in the slick. This afternoon Will and Sean brought their girls down and we had great action with sharks but they were mostly big Spinners. They followed us for 2 hours with non stop hookups putting on a great show with some spectacular jumps. These girls were on to it. Great job guys and girls!IMG_1895 IMG_1869 IMG_1904 IMG_1876

Tuesday May 31st

Fantastic trip this afternoon with Charlie Joe Eric and Dave. We decided to do some chumming since it was cloudy. The fog rolled in once we got out there but we had non stop action with Blacktip, Spinner and Sandbar sharks. When it was time to go we reeled in our baits but saw another shark in the spread so we fed him a bait. Then we saw another so we put out one more and hooked him. Then I looked behind the motor and saw a big Cobia that wanted in on the action so we threw him a Meat Hog Bucktail and ended the day with a 49 pound Cobia! Great job guys!IMG_1839 IMG_1854 IMG_1830 IMG_1818

Saturday May 28th Afternoon

This afternoon Christopher and his crew headed out to try to get him his first Cobia since he always wanted to catch one. We got one good shot and made it count with a citation 44 pound Cobia.  Great job Christopher. No pizza tonight!IMG_1800 IMG_1810

Saturday May 28th Morning

This morning Rasheeda Jesse and Akiela went looking for Cobia. We caught Three but two were a little too small to keep. Lots of action for this great crew from Georgia and Richmond VA. Rasheeda is looking for a new home for her father Jesse to retire near the coast. Good luck on your search and keep me posted!IMG_1792

Thursday May 26th Cobia

Don and Steve had a fun afternoon looking for Cobia. We saw several in some chilly water near the inlet that would not bite. We decided to make a run and found some warmer water with a few willing fish. Great job on your citation fish Steve!IMG_1753

Wednesday afternoon Cobia

This afternoon Matt Dan and Susan went to look for a Cobia. The water was still a bit cool but we managed to catch 2 out of the three Cobia we saw. The third one refused the bucktail and wouldn’t even eat a live croaker we pitched in front of him. Two out of three aint bad. Great job guys!

Monday May 16th Cobia are here!

The Cobia are here! Today Captain Greg Erwin from the North Carolina Ferry Division and his wife Ashley joined me on a Cobia trip. We got a hot tip from a good friend and were lucky enough to box 2 nice Cobias! Always a pleasure to have Greg and Ashley aboard. They are some of the most avid fishermen I know. The Cobia have just arrived in our waters and fishing for them should just get better over the next month. They are the largest hardest fighting fish we catch in our inshore waters and also some of the best eating fish we catch. We sight fish with spinning rods for them and it is very exciting to watch these fish chase down your jigs. They can reach up to 100 pounds with the average being about 40 pounds.IMG_1595

Sunday May 15th

Today Jeffrey Love and his group from Camden NC headed out on a cool breezy morning. We started out catching lots of Speckled Trout. Later on after the wind died out we went to look for some Sea Mullets and they were biting on our first drop. We caught 51 keeper Sea Mullets with a couple citation sized fish in the mix. We tried to get out to the ocean to look for a Cobia but conditions on the bar were not safe due to the wind from last night and early morning so we headed back in. Thanks guys!IMG_1568 IMG_1574 (1) IMG_1585

Saturday May 14th

Dale Boyer and his family headed out this morning in foggy conditions. We stayed close and caught Speckled Trout to start then headed to another spot where we found the seasons first Sea Mullets. They are one of the best eating fish we catch on the OBX. We also caught Spot Croaker Grey Trout Pigfish and lost a nice Flounder. We spent the last hour of the morning trip in the ocean and saw one Cobia aroud 40lbs. He followed the jig but did not bite. All in all a great action packed morning trip!IMG_1563 IMG_1533 IMG_1544 IMG_1548

Fun afternoon with a great group from West Virginia!

Steven Reeves took a one man half day trip this morning and we had great action! We caught lots of Speckled Trout with 4 keepers from 15 to 17 inches, 6 nice 2 pound average bluefish, 2 flounders that just missed the keeper mark and lots of small Stripers all casting artificiials. The highlight of the morning was when Stephen hooked a bluefish that was at least 14 pounds! He bit through the light fluorocarbon leader after a good fight but it was the biggest blue I’ve seen in years! fishing continues tIMG_1408 IMG_1400 IMG_1394o improve every ay as the water warms.

Good Trout fishing Cobias on the way!

The Speckled Trout fishing has started to heat up with some quality keeper sized fish showing up this week! We are also hearing good reports from just south of us that the Cobia are showing up and they should be in range within a couple weeks as the water warms up. Prime time for Cobia is normally may 15th to June 20th as they make their yearly migration through our waters. Cobia are the biggest, hardest fighting fish we catch in our inshore waters averaging around 35 pounds apiece with the larger ones going 60-90 pounds. They are also excellent eating fish with delicious white flaky meat. We sight fish casting jigs to these beasts on light tackle and it is some of the funnest most exciting fishing of the year.

Trout fishing should also improve over the next few weeks as well as Flounder, Blues, Red Drum, Sea Mullet, Spanish Mackerel and more as the water warms. Speckled Trout are also an excellent eating fish but we also practice catch and release for smaller fish and for people who don’t want to take fish home with them. This early sign of Trout is the best we’ve seen in 3 years!IMG_0119fun day411312781_1052162188144467_5942887011359539294_oIMG_3748june troutashley creek troutIMG_0270IMG_0432joes trout

Wednesday with Jeff and Don

Today Jeff and Don had a good morning trip fishing for Speckled Trout in the sound. We had quite a few keepers in the 15 to 17 inch range and had several other nice ones pull the hook. The Trout had Sea Lice on them which is a good sign that they are coming in from the ocean. We also caught our first flounder of the season. Thanks for a fun morning trip guys!IMG_1370 IMG_1368 IMG_1383 IMG_1388

Fishing is heating up!

Today John and Sean headed out for an afternoon trip. We were hoping to find some Trout after hooking a few on Tuesday. No Trout but we caught tons of small Stripers with one 22 inch fish and also caught the first Bluefish of the year. Fishing is picking up with the warmer weather!IMG_1272 IMG_1277

Rick and his friend “Lucky” enjoyed a beautiful spring day on the Sneaky today. We caught lots of small stripers on fly and spin tackle. We also hooked a few trout with one nice keeper and lost two others that were much bigger. First good sign of Speckled Trout this spring on the Outer Banks!IMG_1270 IMG_1265 IMG_1261 IMG_1246
